Newport County welcome Wrexham to Spytty Park for the first league derby between the sides for 22 years.

It is the first league clash between the sides since a 4-1 defeat at the Racecourse Ground in March 1988 and Newport manager Dean Holdsworth cannot wait for the match.

“It’s going to be a great day for Welsh football,” he said.

“It’s exciting for the fans because it’s been a long time coming. I hope they turn out in great numbers on Sunday.

“It’s fantastic to be preparing for a Welsh derby. If you’d have suggested that this club would be in the same division as Wrexham even a few years ago you’d have been carted off to the funny farm,” he added.

“It just shows how far we’ve come. We’re still progressing but the last 18 months have been good times and we’re a proper football club now. I’m delighted for both sets of fans. It should be a great occasion.”

The match is to be televised live on Premier Sports TV on  Sunday (1pm kick-off).

The match was meant to take place tomorrow  but a new television deal means it has been moved.

To obtain this service, the monthly subscription to Premier Sports TV is £6.99.

Following Ollie Thorne’s transfer  to Kidderminster Holdsworth will hoping there are no new injury concerns ahead of the match.

Defender Lee Baker and midfielder Wayne Turk are still sidelined.

Sam Foley is also a major doubt to face Wrexham but Kerry Morgan should be fit.
