Health check: Dealing with the stigma of mental illness

The words ‘mental illness’ will probably conjure a picture in most people’s minds. But the reality is often very different to what we imagine.

Over the last few weeks I've spoken to a number of people who have been affected by mental illness to some degree or another

Over the last few weeks I have met lots of people with mental health issues, ranging from bipolar disorder and schizophrenia to post natal depression.

None of them fits the stereotypical ‘mental’ stereotype, but each of them has talked to me about the stigma they have experiences, and how they’ve struggled to get the support they need.

Watch Mariclare’s first report which looks at how people deal with the stigma of mental illness

That’s why they’ve all agreed to be interviewed for Wales Tonight, to try to break down the barriers associated with mental ill health.

This Sunday is World Mental Health Day, so for the next three nights I will be doing a series of special reports looking at the issues effecting people with mental health, starting with the search for support.

If you’ve been affected by mental illness or know someone who has these links may be useful:

  1. I suffer with Bi-Polar and previously had my mortgage interest paymens paid by the DWP, since the new goverment I have to put £250 towards my mortgage, I only receive £189 per week so for me to have to suddnly find £250 extra per month has caused me very severe financial hardship, and did result in me making an attempt for my own life.

The govement have no idea how to help us who are truly un able to work.
