Teachers given pupil search powers

Teachers will be able to search pupils suspected of carrying dangerous items and confiscate them under new rules

Teachers in Wales have been given new powers that will allow them to search pupils if they suspect they may be carrying a dangerous weapon.

Watch Nick Hartley’s report on the new regulations

The move has been welcomed by many but teaching unions are worried that difficulties defining “reasonable force” will leave their members vulnerable to prosecution.
