Police investigate on-pitch assault after Llanelli player blinded

A rugby player has been arrested by police investigating an alleged on-pich assault which saw Llanelli star Gavin Quinnell blinded in a recent match.

Quinnell – the 26-year-old younger brother of Wales stars Scott and Craig – lost his left eye in an horrific injury which has ended his professional career.

The 23-stone player suffered the eye injury while playing for his home town club Llanelli against rivals Cross Keys.

After emergency surgery Mr Quinnell was given the bad news that his eye suffered irreparable damage.

A 26-year-old Cross Keys player was arrested on suspicion of assault.
A Gwent Police spokeswoman said: “He was released on bail while inquiries are continuing.

“We are working closely with both Llanelli and Cross Keys rugby clubs and the Welsh Rugby Union.”

Mr Quinnell had signed a two-year contract with the Llanelli Scarlets shortly before the eye injury and was hoping to follow his father and brother into the Welsh team.

The player, who is still undergoing medical treatment for the injury, said:

“It’s been overwhelming how many cards, letters, texts and messages we’ve had in recent weeks, and it’s really helped us all.

“It’s great that everyone has been so supportive.”
