Arrests follow raid on illegal landfill site in Tredegar

Environment Agency Wales officers and police raided the site around 08:30GMT on 09 December

Four men from the Heads of the Valleys area have been arrested in connection with an illegal landfill site in Tredegar following a raid earlier today.

More than 50 officers from Environment Agency Wales and Gwent Police raided to site and a number of properties this morning after concerns were raised about the site and possible damage to nearby rivers.

A spokesperson for Environment Agency Wales said that initial investigations have estimated that more than 20,000 tonnes of waste have been illegally landfilled. There is concern that the activity is posing a real threat to nearby rivers.

Two men in their 40s and another in his thirties  were arrested at the site of a waste management company in the Brynmawr area.  A fourth man in his 40s was arrested in the Tredegar area.

The men have been taken to Ystrad Mynach Police Station and questioned for their involvement in the illegal operation.
