Former Premier League striker and Nigerian international Ade Akinbyi will not be joining Newport County as the Exiles pulled out of the deal.
The deal who have seen Akinbyi sign on until the end of the season but County’s boss Dean Holdsworth will now search for other players to help his team push for the play-offs.
The former Wolverhampton Wanderers and Leicester City player has been training with Premier League side Stoke City. And it’s thought the Stoke City manager Tony Pulis who is Newport-born convinced Akinbyi to talk to the Exiles.
However Holdsworth felt Akinbyi was not the right player for the club.
“We just felt that he didn’t tick all of the boxes and at this moment it wasn’t right to bring him to the club,” said Holdsworth.
“We’ll look elsewhere and hope to bring in someone else because we only had 16 players available today.”
