Cardiff City star Craig Bellamy has been arrested by police investigating a 3am fight, according to reports.
Bellamy, 31, was questioned about an alleged assault on two men – one the son of a high-ranking policeman.
The fiery Cardiff City striker was held in custody by South Wales Police this morning where he answered questions with his solicitor sitting alongside him.
Father-of-three Bellamy was later released on bail while inquiries continue.
The former Wales skipper was out with friends in Cardiff’s Caroline Street, which is more commonly known as ‘Chippy Lane’.
Witnesses say he was asked for his autograph by fans and challenged to a race down the street when the good humoured encounter turned ugly.
Two men in their twenties from Pontypool, Gwent, suffered facial injuries in the alleged assault.
South Wales Police later studied CCTV from cameras in the street.
Bellamy was arrested in connection with the alleged assault yesterday morning.
Police are appealing for anyone who saw the incident at 3am last Sunday morning to come forward.
A spokesman said: “We are investigating an assault in Caroline Street which was reported to officers on patrol in Cardiff city centre on Sunday morning.
“Two men aged 20 and 26 sustained facial injuries which did not require hospital treatment at the time.
“A 31-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of assault and has been bailed pending further inquiries.”
Bellamy was unavailable for comment after being released from custody.
