2012 Olympics first event to be held in Cardiff

Cardiff’s Millenniumn Stadium is hosting the first event of the 2012 Olympics two days before the opening ceremony on the 27 July.

The women’s football tournament is set to start in the city on the 25 July according to Games schedules released today.

The first match will be held at the Millennium Stadium on Wednesday, July 25 at 1600 BST with other women’s matches taking place later that day at Coventry’s Ricoh Arena and Glasgow’s Hampden Park.

The men’s football tournament will start a day later.

UK Athletics president Lynn Davies has welcomed the decision;

“It’s fantastic news for Cardiff and for Wales to think that we’re staging effectively the first event of the 2012 Olympic Games,” said Davies.

“It’s great for the city of Cardiff which really is a city of sport.”
