A man arrested on suspicion of assaulting Llanelli rugby player Gavin Quinnell, who lost the sight in one of his eyes, will not face criminal charges..

Gavin Quinnell lost the sight in his left eye after an incident during a match against Cross Keys at Pandy Park on October 2, 2010.

After emergency surgery the 23-year-old was given the bad news that his eye suffered irreparable damage.

The Crown Prosecution Service has advised Gwent police not take any further action against the 26-year-old man arrested in connection with the incident.

Mr Quinnell, brother of former Wales internationals Scott and Craig, was told he had lost his sight in his left eye at Newport’s Royal Gwent Hospital.

He  had signed a two-year contract with the Llanelli Scarlets shortly before the eye injury and was hoping to follow his father and brother into the Welsh team.
