In a statement released through Gwent Police the family of Nikitta Grender said they are living in a nightmare.
Mourners gathered at St John’s Church, Maindee, for the funeral service.
The body of 19-year-old Miss Grender, who was two weeks away from giving birth, was discovered after a fire in her flat last month. She had been stabbed.
Miss Grender’s family had revealed their daughter had chosen the name Kelsey-May for the girl she was expecting.
In a statement ahead of today’s funeral they thanked friends and family for their continued support and described their “living nightmare”:
“We ask that Nikitta and Kelsey-May are not forgotten as we continue to grieve for them both.
“We continue to live in this nightmare and now have to face the next few months ahead of us awaiting the forthcoming trial.
“We ask to be left alone with friends and family to get through this period.”
Carl Whant, 26, has been charged with her murder. He is also charged with child destruction.
The trial is likely to be held at Cardiff Crown Court at the beginning of October.
