Paedophile guilty of running Kidwelly “sex cult”

An “evil” paedophile was today found guilty of leading a satanic sex cult from his home in a small Welsh town.

Colin Batley, 48, of Kidwelly in Carmarthenshire, presided over a quasi-religious cult which preyed on young children and indulged in occult rites.

Today, at Swansea Crown Court, he was found guilty of carrying out a series of perverted sexual acts on children and adults, including rape. Three women were also convicted of offences.

Batley was found guilty of 27 offences and the jury is considering nine other charges.

Elaine Bately, his wife, has been found guilty of the five charges she faced.

Fellow defendants Jacqueline Marling, 42, and Shelly Millar, 35, were also found guilty of sex-related charges faced during the five-week trial.

Marling was found guilty of five offences and Miller two.

A fifth alleged cult member, Sandra Iveson, 45, was cleared of the one charge she faced of indecency.

A sixth defendant, Vincent Barden, who is unconnected with the cult, was found not guilty of rape, but had already admitted indecent assault.

Judge Paul Thomas told them they had been found guilty of extremely serious charges and their sentences “will be vast”.

The four cult members and Barden will be sentenced on Friday.
