The Sheesh Mahal in Llanelli has been named the best curry house in Wales at an awards ceremony at Cineworld in Cardiff.

The restaurant beat off hot competition from three other finalists to be crowned Welsh Curry House of the Year 2011, having already scooped the award once before in 2008.

The award was presented by two independent judges, Sirajul Islam and Bonny Young.

Sirajul Islam, who moved to Wales in 1963 and is a proud Welsh speaker, said: “The Welsh Lamb curry offered to us at the Sheesh Mahal was delicious. The strong flavour of the lamb together with the buttery texture successfully complemented the aromatic spices. The rice – so often overlooked – was perfectly cooked and worked well with the taste of the curry.”

Incorporating Welsh ingredients into the recipes was an important part of the final round of this year’s competition. The four finalists were judged specifically on the quality of two dishes – a signature dish of their choice and a new Welsh curry made with Welsh lamb and leeks.

The four finalists were:

North Wales: Rozi’s Tandoori Indian Restaurant and Kareem’s The Restaurant

Mid and West Wales: Sheesh Mahal

South Wales: Ashoka Tandoori
