It all started as a joke hashtag. “#cocktailclub? lolz”.
I didn’t really think it would become a real thing. But it would appear that the girls of Cardiff really don’t need an excuse to jump on the cocktail-drinking bandwagon, which is absolutely fine by me and a quality I admire in them.
On my life list I have the task of “Drink 100 different cocktails”. I’m currently up to 14.
I’ve drunk many a cocktail in my time. But I decided I was only allowed to include a previous cocktail on the list if I could remember its ingredients. Mojito made it on. Slippery Nipple did not.
Most of the girls I know that like to drink cocktails live in other places. So once again, I turned to Twitter for some help.
I’ve met some frankly amazing people through Cardiff Blogs and we quickly formed a 20-strong group of girls willing to go out and drink alcohol in help of pursuit of my goal. Bless them. So selfless, right?
The next scheduled date for Cocktail Club — and the first official meeting — is 13 August. (Although Liz, co founder and cocktail drinker extraordinaire, and I may have had a couple of practice runs.)
Cocktail Club is subsidised by our own wallets. However, I’m a big fan of free alcohol. So I’ve put Cocktail Club down on the list of Cardiff Rocktails competition. (It’s offering a night of free Rocktails — frozen vodka cocktail pouches that come in three delicious-sounding flavours — if you plan a party in Cardiff during August and post it on the Cardiff Rockups Facebook Event page here or tweet and tag with #CardiffRockup.) If we win, the Rocktails girls will rock up (see what I did there?) at our place with glasses and cocktails and help you get your party started. Fingers crossed.
Cocktail Club is all-inclusive. So, if you’d like to come, then please do!
After pre-cocktail cocktails, we were planning to visit Pica Pica. Because it’s a match day, it won’t be running its 2-4-1 cocktail deal. (Which is a shame because their cocktails are delicious.)
Instead we’re thinking about paying a visit to Ffresh in Cardiff Bay. They are offering 2-4-1 cocktails and the added bonus of (hopefully) not being packed to the rafters with rugby fans.
Feel free to drop #CocktailClub a line on Twitter. I’m @miametro and Liz is @lizmrawlins. Or contact us via our Facebook page if it sounds like your kind of night. I’ll be the one at the bar with a list in one hand, a cocktail in the other and a big smile on my face.
Sarah Hill is settling into life in Cardiff after a cheeky Welshman swept her off her feet. She can currently be found helping to run Cardiff Blogs, tweeting, chatting about books on Radio Cardiff or swearing at InDesign. She blogs at sarahmia.co.uk.
